Wed 15 Nov 2006 » Teechers Term Is Over

Teechers completed its run at the New Wimbledon Studio Theatre on Saturday to a packed house, and brought a very successful week to a close. Congratulations to all involved, the crew, the director Ian Ward, and especially to the cast, who all gave electric performances!

Add to that the slick lighting, subtle and effective sets and snappy musical interludes, and it all added up to another Carlton triumph!

Photos from the production will be available on the show page soon.

Wed 18 Oct 2006 » Showcase LXXX Announcement

Teechers is well underway now and news from the front line is that it's going to be a brilliant show (tickets are going fast so get on to the Studio now if you want to support the Carlton). So we are looking forward to the next entertaining endeavour which is the Carlton Showcase on 22nd and 23rd February 2007.

The Showcase is performed over two nights and is an evening of short plays and sketches. It usually lasts about two and a half hours, including the interval.

This is your chance to do something daring and innovative. We are looking for short plays, scenes, sketches that you want to perform/direct. They can be serious, funny or in-between and you can even write your own material. Just to give you some idea of the scope, previous hits have been an adaptation of The Graduate, scenes from Taming of the Shrew, Victoria Wood sketches and The Lord of the Rings in 20 minutes. You can do duologues, monologues, or full scale epic productions. The only limit is that plays should be about 15-20 mins max or 5-10 mins max in the case of monologues.

The first meeting to discuss the showcase will be Thursday 16th November at 8pm at the Wimbledon Community Centre where you can meet directors looking for cast and actors looking for directors and generally find out what's going on. But in the meantime if you already have an idea of what you want to do, want some more information or just want to express a vague interest please email me via the committee.

Your friendly Showcase producer,

Kristen

Wed 27 Sep 2006 » Teechers Tickets Now On Sale

Teechers tickets are now on sale at the Wimbledon Theatre box office. After the scarily fast sell out of the last two productions if I were you I'd get them sooner rather than later to avoid disappointment.

I've had a sneaky peak at one of the rehearsals and I can tell you now that it's already looking fantastic, so get in there and buy now or you'll be kicking yourself well into next year... and that would hurt a lot!

Mon 21 Aug 2006 » Outside Edge - Howzat!?

Some words from the Chair on this successful production:

"Well the cast was never on the OUTSIDE with this one and certainly never teetered on the EDGE!

"A fine bunch of performances from every member of the Cast. The Crew did their bit too and it all seemed effortless. Ticket sales looked to be slow at the beginning but in the end respectable audience numbers ensued all week with a sell-out on the Thursday, close to it on Sat and the Treasurer says that a profit looks well and good.

"But that is not just what we are about. Carlton in its typical way has provided a wonderful production and from all reports the cast bonded well and had a great time too - especially throughout a relatively short rehearsal period! The After Show Party to 3:00 am says a bit more too...

"No ducks here but another 'century' of course! Well done Deb, Cast and Crew!"

Fri 18 Aug 2006 » Teechers Readthrough

The Readthrough for Teechers is Monday 21st August at 8pm in Rooms C/D of the Wimbledon Community Centre. The Auditions are Thursday 24th and Tuesday 29th August at 8pm Rooms C/D of the Wimbledon Community Centre. (Please note, the second one is on Tuesday because of the bank holiday)

As a further reminder, here's the spiel of what it's all about....

TEECHERS by John Godber, Directed by Ian Ward

Fast moving, inventive and highly entertaining, Teechers vigorously evokes life at a modern Comprehensive, using the format of an end-of-term play to sketch a drama teacher's progress through two terms of recalcitrant classes, cynical colleagues and unhelpful caretakers. The play runs the gamut of emotions, climaxing with the final scene which gives a poignant edge to the comedy.

The cast (despite being set in a school) will comprise all adults, ages ranging from awkward school kids to ambitious teachers to obstructive caretakers.

The show runs from Tuesday 7 to Saturday 11 November inclusive (Saturday includes a matinee and evening performance)

If you cannot make either of the audition dates, please let Ian know on iward@capsticks.co.uk and he can hopefully arrange another time for you. Also - please remember that in order to take part in what is sure to be a cracking production, we absolutely must have your subs!

Mon 14 Aug 2006 » A Message From Jane Lewis, MITC Director

The Audition for T S Eliot's 'Murder in the Cathedral' will take place at the Community Centre on Thursday 17th at 8pm.

Performances of this rehearsed reading will be on Saturday 30 September and Sunday 1 October in the marvellous space of St Mark's Church in Wimbledon.

Written in verse, this powerful and atmospheric play recounts the events around the death of Thomas à Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury in 1143.

If you're in 'Outside Edge' and therefore performing on 17 August, but would like to be in 'Murder', please let me know. If you are interested in being in 'Teechers' and worried that the two plays will clash - don't panic, I am planning to have rehearsals at my home (near Haydon's Road station) on evenings other than Mondays and Thursdays and sometimes at the weekends.

So if you fancy being Thomas à Becket himself, a knight, a tempter, a woman of Canterbury or a priest, please come along on 17 August. Val Foskett (my co-director) and I look forward to seeing you then.

And don't forget - to join in - you gotta pay your subs!

Regards, Jane Lewis (Director)

Wed 18 Jan 2006 » Spring 2006 Production

The Resistible Rise Of Arturo Ui

by

Bertholt Brecht

Directed by Mike Ahmad, to be performed at New Wimbledon Studio Theatre, 6th-10th June 2006

The Play is a thinly veiled historical allegory of Hitler's rise to power in Weimar Germany during the 1930s. Each of the play's scenes relates directly to a specific historical episode in this era. Hitler is represented as a small town gangster by the name of Ui who by means of violence, threats and bribery assumes power in (for our production) a semi-fictional East End setting. True to Brecht's style it has a lot of black comedy with some song and dance numbers.

Read through - 27th February

Auditions - 2nd and 6th March - Audition piece required

WCC, 8pm
